The UE Red Warriors' Proud History by: Chynyta from the book of Julian V. Cruz "The University of the East and the Man who founded it" |
|
In 1952, two years after becoming a University, UE applied to the UAAP and was granted a 2 year probationary membership. applying at the same time and given probationary membership were Adamson University, University of Manila, and Manila Central University When the 2 year probationary period was up, Only UE was granted permanent membership. The following two years (1957-1958 and 1958-1959), it was the turn of the UE baskeball team to star in the UAAP, winning the championship twice in a row The year 1958-1959 also marked the first time UE played host to the UAAP athletic season. It was to play host again in 1964-1965, 1969-1970, 1975-1976, 1982-1983, 1990-1991. The back to back championships UE won in 1957-1959 presaged a dramatic dominance over UAAP basketball that was to last for nearly 30 years undimmed even by the drought that followed in the next 10 years, when it won no basketball trophies. UAAP basketball has always been dominated by FEU and UST but from 1957-1993, FEU has won 9 championships and UST 4. In the same period UE won a total of 17 championships. The last championship UE won is 1985. Even if we consider the over-all record of all UAAP members since its formation in 1938, UE still dominates the basketball, despite the fact that it became UAAP permanent member only in 1954. The statistics for the 1938 period shows that FEU and UST each won 14 UAAP basketball championships, Whereas UE's record, in its abbreviated period of 1954 to 1993, is already 17. Basketball is the national sport and UE's dominance of the game in the UAAP ensured that the same UE would be emblazoned on the sports pages of the daily newspapers during the long competition season year after year. The impression of greatness and stability which always goes with the winning trophy, bet it in a parochial league or in international olympics, further concretized the reputation of UE. (Excerpted from "The University of the East and the Man who founded it" by Julian V. Cruz, 1996.) |
